Here we are, back for another round of open source development. Some time has passed sine I did the last course and I am excited to dive back into the world of open source. Instead of working on a bunch of different projects, this time around we are focusing on improving Telescope and it’s dependencies. This course will be ran kind of like an internship where we are all development interns at Telescope. We will have to participate in meetings, submit issues, and PR’s as well as reviewing them. There will also be a chance for us to take the lead and head up the weeks meetings when we have to take our turn at being the sheriff. The sheriff has a number of responsibility but their main role is to ensure the project is constantly progressing and never getting bogged down. Kinda like being the Senior developer of the team.
Goals
I am currently working at the place I did my co-op for. I would like to get more experience with some of the tools they are using in their stack. Docker is what we use to deploy our different versions of our application. Would be nice to get some more experience with that. We also use React, so while I already have a good amount of time with it, there’s always something more to be learned. Getting some experience with Kubernetes would also be nice. I know it is not in the project yet, but apparently there might be some use for it so getting it going from the ground up would be a great learning opportunity. Finally, sharpening up on my git skills and improving my workflow will also help me out greatly in my future endeavors.
Conclusion
There was not a lot to be done this week. We had to get Telescope up and running on our local environment. We also had our first triage meeting that was lead by Mr. HumphD himself. Went through how to run a triage meeting. I was assigned a relatively simple task of just rebasing an old PR. I took that on so I can better fulfill my duties as Sheriff when I take over the mantel on Monday.
