Hi, I’m Tim and this blog will be documenting my journey through DPS 909 – Topics in Open Source Development. A professional level course offered by Seneca College.
First, a little bit about myself. I am a 33 year old military veteran who is just starting my 5th semester towards earning a bachelor of software development. I am currently maintaining a 4.0 gpa and I plan on keeping it that way! When I’m not doing school work you can find me out for walks with my dog, practicing Jujitsu, or cooking up a storm. I am currently living in Scarborough but I have lived all around the GTA as well as all over Canada.
I decided to take this course because I have always had an interest in open source development, but never knew how to get involved. I got hooked on Android when it first came out because it was open source. I liked the idea that the source code was readily available because that shows they have nothing to hide. I also didn’t like the business model Apple was employing. That was a long time ago however and even though android is still technically open source it does not feel that way with all of them coming pre-loaded with Google’s spyware. That is why I want to contribute to one of the up and coming open source mobile operating system projects. I want a phone option that does not belong to Apple or Google and am willing to volunteer my time to help make it happen.
